Cheyney University

New student housing at Cheney University
The founding of Cheyney University in 1852 was made possible by Richard Humphreys, a Quaker philanthropist who bequeathed $10,000, one tenth of his estate, to design and establish a school to educate the descendants of the African race.

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education was established by statute on July 1, 1983. As a charter member of the system, Cheyney State College became Cheyney University of Pennsylvania in 1983, the oldest of the fourteen member institutions and the oldest Historically Black College/University (HBCU) in the nation.

Today, Cheyney University students represent a variety of races, cultures, and nationalities who receive educational instruction far beyond the vision of Richard Humphreys. Cheyney graduates still become teachers, but students also enter careers such as journalism, medicine, business, science/technology, law, communications, and government service. The university offers baccalaureate degrees in an array of disciplines and master’s degrees in teaching, education and public administration.

Cheyney University is proud of its more than 30,000 graduates. Well known alumni include the late Ed Bradley, a correspondent of the CBS program “60 Minutes;” Pedro Rivera, Pennsylvania Secretary of Education; Robert W. Bogle, publisher and CEO of the Philadelphia Tribune, the oldest newspaper continuously owned and operated by an African American; Dr. Audrey F. Bronson, a member of the PA State System of Higher Education’s Board of Governors, ordained minister and retired educator; Dr. Gladys Styles Johnston, former Chancellor of the University of Nebraska at Kearney; Thaddeus Kirkland, State Representative and Mayor of Chester, PA; and civil rights activist, the late Bayard Rustin.

Haverford College

Haverford College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college located in Haverford, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. All students of the College are undergraduates, and nearly all reside on campus.

Strawbridge Memorial Observatory at Haverford College
The college was founded in 1833 by area members of the Orthodox Philadelphia Yearly Meeting of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) to ensure an education grounded in Quaker values for young Quaker men. Although the college no longer has a formal religious affiliation, Quaker philosophy still influences campus life. Originally an all-male institution, Haverford began admitting female transfer students in the 1970s and became fully co-educational in 1980. Currently, more than half of Haverford's students are women. For most of the 20th century, Haverford's total enrollment was kept below 300, but the school went through two periods of expansion during and after the 1970s, and its current enrollment is 1,290 students.

Today Haverford offers its students a wide range of educational choices and considerable flexibility in choosing their areas of study or specialization. The college offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees in 31 majors across humanities, social sciences and natural sciences.

Haverford College is a member of the Tri-College Consortium, which allows students to register for courses at both Bryn Mawr College and Swarthmore College. It is also a member of the Quaker Consortium (“Penn-Pal”) which allows students to cross-register at the University of Pennsylvania.

The college has produced, among others, 3 Nobel laureates, 6 Pulitzer Prize Recipients, 20 Rhodes Scholars, and 104 Fulbright Scholars.

Valley Forge Military College

The Military College of Pennsylvania™

Along with its prep school, offering studies for grades 7 – 12, VFMC has a long tradition of fostering personal growth through a unique, comprehensive system built on Five Cornerstones: Academic Excellence, Personal Motivation, Character Development, Physical Development, and Leadership.

Whether your ambitions are rooted in their rich military traditions or shaped by your scholarly endeavors, you are invited to explore all that they have to offer. They offer three paths toward earning your degree: as a member of the Corps of Cadets, as a Commuter Student, or through the Early Commissioning Program via ROTC.

Although they are a military school, the end result is not necessarily to pursue a career in the military – though nearly 40% of graduates pursue a military career, such is not necessarily the end result. The VFMC “military model” is, at its core, a structured way to teach students life skills that will propel them ahead of their peers. Noted alumni in other fields include  J.D. Salinge and Julian Peterson.

Programs of Study

The college curriculum combines six core competencies with five academic programs and concentrations to provide a foundation of understanding, knowledge, and skills. The core competencies broaden each student’s perspective and connection to academic work and careers for the 21st century. These social, historical, and scientific contexts develop and prepare students to transfer to competitive four year programs at local, regional, national, and international institutions.

Villanova University

Villanova University is a private, co-educational institution that was founded in 1842. It has a total undergraduate enrollment of 6,994, its setting is suburban, and the campus size is 260 acres. It utilizes a semester-based academic calendar. Villanova University's ranking in the 2017 edition of Best Colleges is National Universities, 50.

Villanova University, named for the Spanish Augustinian St. Thomas of Villanova, is still affiliated with the Augustinian Order. Located just 12 miles from Philadelphia in the suburb of Radnor Township, Villanova – often shortened to 'Nova – offers popular student organizations like the Blue Key Society, which gives admissions tours and hosts prospective student days, and Rays of Sunshine, the student community service office. A thriving Greek community at Villanova encompasses about two dozen fraternities and sororities. Athletics are also important, and the Villanova Wildcats – known for their successful men's basketball program – mainly compete in the NCAA Division I Big East Conference. Incoming freshmen are guaranteed housing for their first three years in any of the 18 residence halls or eight apartment-style buildings.

Four of Villanova's five schools serve undergraduate and graduate students, and graduate programs include those in the Villanova School of Business and School of Law. Undergraduates can enter the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Villanova School of Business, College of Engineering or College of Nursing. Perhaps due to their use as military hospitals during the Civil War and World War I, university myth has it that two on-campus buildings, Alumni Hall and Picotte Hall at Dundale, are haunted. Villanova is also home to the famous Liberty Bell's twin, known as the “Sister Bell.”
